A Challenger 2 with bar armour and with reinforced turret sides being tested on the Bovington training area. While the basic Challenger 2 could carry up to 15 tons in additional armour kits, wear on road wheels increased and cross country mobility was somewhat reduced. These were necessary measures to maximise protection against RPG type weapons on operations in Iraq. (Tim Neate)

Late 2004 saw the first change in the Challenger 2’s armour protection in Iraq. The RDG Challenger seen here named Cruel Dragoon carries bar armour on the hull rear and Chobham armour appliqué blocks on the turret sides. These first improvements were designed to increase the Challenger’s protection from hollow charge warheads on areas not fitted with Chobham armour. It was the first stage in a deadly race between insurgent warheads and the Challenger 2’s armour protection that was pursued for the rest of Operation Telic. The stop sign on the turret side is secured with bungee cords. (Sergeant David ‘Bob’ Monkhouse, with kind permission RDG)
